GREC (Gadolinium Research & Education Committee) is joining the ESMRMB as a working group and it is our pleasure to invite you to the first ESMRMB-GREC meeting.
The meeting is designed as unique space aimed at sharing ideas and data on MRI contrast agent research and possible gadolinium toxicity after the administration of gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs). We believe that joint international efforts will remain essential to optimize diagnostic efficacy and improve patient safety in MR imaging.
After the European Medicines Agency (EMA) recommended the suspension of the marketing authorization for high-risk GBCAs, the European landscape has changed significantly. Despite the recognition that linear GBCAs are depositing more gadolinium than macrocyclic GBCAs, no health effects have been associated with either class of agents.
Nevertheless, many knowledge gaps remain. Many of these have been identified during the 2018 ACR/RSNA/NIH international meeting, which has outlined a research agenda for the years ahead. The improvement of knowledge through research remains essential to better determine the long-term effects of GBCA exposure. An update of ongoing gadolinium research will be presented.
